Flamenco, Boleros & Latin Jazz Singer

Jafelin’s warm and innovative approach to Boleros, Latin Jazz Ballads, is intuitive and evokes intimate and romantic emotion.  Her voice is rich and unique in the way she handles tones and dynamics of the songs.  Often the accompaniment is well orchestrated with a special blend of traditional instruments with new styles.

Short Bio

Jafelin was born in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, a country where Spanish influence is ever-present.  Oddly enough, Jafelin’s lifelong interest in Flamenco only bloomed upon her coming to Canada in 1996.  Her particular talent as Cantaora (singer) didn’t go unnoticed, and It wasn’t long before Jafelin became a regular in Flamenco circles.  She has been working as a professional singer now for over 15 years. She has worked and performed with many Spanish artists across Canada and internationally.  Today, Jafelin is one of Canada's preeminent Flamenco and Latin singers with many Spanish genres in her repertoire.  In late 2015, Jafelin co-produced the popular concert tour, FlamenCubana!, along with her husband.  She performed with 12 great Spanish Flamenco and Cuban artists to the delight of audiences in Vancouver, Victoria and Naniamo.

She has recorded three albums.  The most recent, a collaboration with the unique international Cuban band Brisas Del Palmar recorded in Santiago de Cuba in 2015.

Full Biography

Jafelin was born in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, a country where Spanish influence is ever-present. Since her childhood, it was evident that singing and dancing were not only a passion, but a gift as well. In her teens, Jafelin studied and performed contemporary dance, and she later studied voice with renowned Venezuelan tenor Carlos Almenar Otero.  Oddly enough, Jafelin’s lifelong interest in Flamenco only bloomed upon her coming to Canada in 1996, where she took Flamenco dance lessons at the Spanish Cultural Center in New Westminster with Professor Monzón, and later with Rosario Ancer at Centro Flamenco and Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy under the guidance of Oscar Nieto and Kasandra.

Jafelin’s particular talent as Cantaora (singer) didn’t go unnoticed, and It wasn’t long before Jafelin became a regular in Flamenco circles around the Greater Vancouver area performing as cantaora.  She was invited to contribute to Flamenco guitarist, Juan de Maria’s CD called Mimbre, where she performs the song Los Tientos de la Niña with her trademark intense, deep-felt passion. She has since created,  She has also performed as the lead cantaora in hundreds of Flamenco shows and for many Flamenco dance academies in British Columbia.  She has been working as a professional singer with musicians and dance companies now for over 15 years.  Today, Jafelin is one of Canada's preeminent Flamenco and Latin singers and has added Boleros and many other Latin genres to her repertoire.

Jafelin has been fortunate to receive guidance from various Spanish Flamenco singers, such as, Melchora Ortega, David Lagos, Jose Valencia, Manuel Tane, Daniel Jurado, Rafael De Utrera, Eva and Domingo Rubichi, Jesus Montoya, Momi de Cadiz, Jesus Flores de Moron, David Hornillo, Cristo Cortez, Jose Cortez and Manuel Ta, Matias Exposito, and Jose Lara both in Spain and Vancouver.  Jafelin has had the pleasure of performing with many excellent Flamenco artists such as, guitarist Gaspar Rodriguez of Madrid, Vicente Griego, Christina Hall, Ricardo Lopez, Emilio Ochando.  Jafelin has had the good fortune to perform in Jerez Spain, and in many cities in Canada.  Most recently, Jafelin has had the pleasure of a recording an album in Cuba in collaboration with the country's most unique band, El Grupo Cubano, Brisas Del Palmar.  

 

Yet, Jafelin is never satisfied with her art and is always striving for more.  She has been working as a professional singer with musicians and dance companies now for over 16 years.  Today, Jafelin is one of Canada's preeminent Flamenco and Latin singers and has added Boleros and many other Latin genres to her repertoire.

 

Discography
"Tantos Caminos" -  A collaboration with guitarist, Gerardo Alcala (Gary Hayes), in which they offer renditions of popular traditional Flamenco forms.

"Algo De Mi"  -  Is a selection of Boleros songs that Jafelin sings with a Latin Jazz style arrangements. Boleros were and still are popular for over the last 50 years.

"Cantos y Memorias de mi Gente" - Just released album of favorite Spanish and Cuban songs old and new in collaboration with El Grupo Cubano, Brisas Del Palmar of Santiago de Cuba.

Flamenco Cantaora

Flamenco, Ritmos Latinos, Tradicional y Variantes

El canto es mi pasión. Soy cantaora de Flamenco, dedicada al arte flameco y a los ritmos latinos. Mi sentir por el flamenco es una relación con mi propia alma, entrelazando sentimientos de alegria, tristeza y redescubrimiento. La belleza de conectar con gente auténtica, con el mundo, y lograr hacer sentir la vida con todos los sentidos es lo que me impulsa. Nací en Venezuela y siempre me intrigaron las coplas y canciones españolas. Toda mi vida me han rodeado influencias españolas, que me han lanzado al sendero del arte flamenco.

Mi hogar por más de 16 años ha sido Vancouver, Canadá. He tenido la dicha de encontrar y cantar con muchos músicos y bailaores flamencos locales y extranjeros. Quizás reconozcas algunos de ellos en mi Galeria de Fotos.
